Thailand Pt. III: Bangkok

Our Thailand trip began and ended in the country’s capital. As we arrived in Bangkok, after 16 hours of flying, we were struck by the muggy hot weather (it was about 0°C in Switzerland when we boarded the plane). Fully loaded with our backpacks we started the journey by finding a place for the night first.

We had quite a culture shock. Bangkok is pure chaos if you compare it to slow-and-quiet Zurich. But fortunately the friendly locals made our start easier and so we managed not only to find a nice place for the night, but also had a great Tuk Tuk tour to some of the must-see landmarks in the city.

And because we missed our connection flight and were stuck in Singapore Changi Airport for 7 hours on our way home, I had plenty of time to capture the amazing Check-in hall:

Thailand Pt. II: Chiang Mai & northern Thailand

Before we went to the beaches, boats and islands (see previous post), we went from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. When we arrived in the morning – after a 12 hour bus ride – the locals were wearing thick jackets and woollen hats. Were we really that far up north?

Fortunately it wasn’t that cold. We had around 15°C in the mornings – for Thais this seems to be near absolute zero. Although Chiang Mai is the second biggest city in Thailand it is almost a village compared to Bangkok. From Chiang Mai we went on a 2 day trekking tour into the mountains, visited the White Temple in Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle and we even took Thai cooking lessons…

Thailand Pt. I: Beaches, boats and islands

In late January we took off to our three week trip across Thailand. We started our journey in Bangkok – without a specific route in mind and without booking any accommodations. All we knew was that we wanted to travel from the north to the south of Thailand. And besides all the friendly people we met and the delicious food we ate, we also avoided the freezing cold in Europe.

Let’s start at the last part of our journey: the paradisal beaches and islands of south Thailand. We started our little island exploration tour on the main land in Ao Nang / Krabi where we visited the famous Railley Beach and the stunning Poda Island. The next stop was Koh Phi Phi. Then we left the Andaman Sea and went to Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand.

Beaches, boats and islands are nice in black & white, too…

Fruits

As you might know it’s this time of the year again where thousands of students are busy learning things they might never need again after their exams. And I’m one of these poor creatures. But because my attention span isn’t as lengthy as I wish it would be, I sometimes actively search some distraction.

For example photographing fruits. So I just show you some images (more might follow in a later post) and go back to the books…

A warm November weekend in London

In mid-November we hoisted Jolly Roger to go on account in good ol’London. Contrary to popular belief, the weather there wasn’t rainy, foggy and cold at all. We enjoyed the city in bright sunshine and 15°C. And we even had our own personal city guide Francesca.

During the four day stay in the city, we walked estimated 500km, drank a few pints of still mineral water (room temperature, without ice) in some lovely Pubs, went to a comedy club (more still mineral water), ate a healthy English breakfast and did what all tourists do: looking at things.

Autumn arrived

After almost endless weeks of warm and sunny weather in September it eventually got cold and gray. Autumn arrived and with it the urge to collect food for the winter and to go into hibernation.

Espresso cups

I’m kind of a coffee addict, especially when at work. But at the office I don’t have such cool espresso cups like I do at home. So it’s time to present them in the proper light.

I used normal plain white copy paper as background / surface and a single Canon Speedlite 430EX II (off camera) was the only light source.

The subject is just perfect for a little collage, isn’t it?

The last one is a little bit different. Still espresso cups but this time photographed from above with increased brightness for a (nearly) plain white surface.

Holiday in Italy – Part III: Vieste

The third stop of our Italy trip was at the Adriatic coast. We spent five days in Vieste, during the day mostly at the beach. Because of the African heat wave that struck Italy during these days we buried ourselfs under our sunshade. In the evenings we went to the charming historic center of Vieste, which is on top of the cliff and ate tasty sea food.

Holiday in Italy – Part II: Foglianise & surroundings

After two days in Rome we took the train to Benevento where we were picked up and brought to the small town of Foglianise. The contrast between the hectic city and the calm countryside was obvious.

The word I heard the most was mangia – eat. And boy I ate (much and excellent food). It was hot and the newspaper warned us about the upcomming African heat, so no refreshment in sight. At least we would be by the sea in Vieste when the highest temperatures should arrive. Until then we had time to discover the surroundings of Foglianise, to visit the Reggia in Caserta – and to eat of course…
